This was the final in my Character Design class--the prompt was to revamp a character from your childhood into something a bit more badass and mature. I chose Chel from The Road to El Dorado because she's a clever BAMF but most of the fanart you find for her is badly drawn porn.

I really tried to push the boundaries with this one with both dramatic perspective and lighting, and for the most part I think it paid off. There are a few things out of place, but that's how you learn, right?

Nice perspective and shading! The dress is cool too and fits right into the style of the movie!
I struggle with perspective like this but would like to try it. Do you have any tips? :)

Tips on perspective...well, I think the main thing that helps is just doing it! Pushing perspective whenever you can, even though it's not great to begin with. I struggled a lot to get this piece to work out the way I wanted, and even looking at it now there are some things I feel like could be fixed. But that's okay--don't be afraid to change, tweak, or redo things. Looking up things on linear perspective helps to get a good base, especially two or three point perspective. Try to understand how the anatomy of a character works--the underlying shapes (such as a cylinder for the arm, another for the rib cage and hips, etc) can help guide how they would be foreshortened. Work from life for a while with foreshortening, preferably with shapes first then moving toward the human figure...it's kind of boring, but it's really helpful if you're mindful while you're working.
Sorry for the late reply, but I hope those tips help you! :)

I reaaally like this piece. There's a sense of introspection and mystery, which I think is very fitting to the character. The lighting and colors are great (specially the fact her dress is purple; like she's in-between her world and the other). The perspective on the platform itself is a little off, though; the top edges are too open for the sort of perspective you were going for. For example, I think the lower edge should be hidden behind the top one. I'm no expert though, it's just my observation. It's a lovely piece overall!

Yeah, the perspective is definitely a bit off in a few places--I was a bit overambitious! That platform was a pain from start to finish haha

Thank you for your kind words--I'm really glad you like it :)

Very beautiful image. It has a suggestion of substance and story behind it; a little haunting to. Although her face is quite peaceful. Badass and mature? Totally.

Thanks! Yeah, I wanted it to be a little stronger than just Chel being sexy somewhere, so I'm glad that reads :)

This looks amazing :D I love how the water looks. I don't know why, but I giggled a lot at the badly drawn porn statement. XD People need to draw more..tasteful drawings of her, like this one.
